How Vehicle Market Intelligence Unlocks ₹169 Crore in Insurance Renewals

The meeting I'm thinking of was a renewal pricing committee, and it was going exactly nowhere. The team had a 6.4-lakh-strong lapsed motor book and a slide that said "renewal conversion: industry average." Someone proposed steeper discounts. Someone else proposed more headcount for the call centre. Both ideas cost money, and neither answered the question nobody had asked: how many of those six lakh policies are even on vehicles that still exist?

That question changed the whole programme. Because once they actually checked, the answer was uncomfortable. Roughly fifteen percent of the lapsed list was attached to vehicles that had been sold, scrapped, or deregistered. Another chunk had changed owners or moved states. The majority, seven in ten, were people driving the same vehicle with no cover, who'd simply missed the date. Run that last group through a focused campaign and ninety thousand policies came back. At an average premium around ₹18,800, that's ₹169 crore, give or take, of gross written premium recovered. The tool that found it was Vehicle Market Intelligence, and this post is about how that actually works.

The leak nobody measured

Here's the awkward truth about Motor Insurance Renewal in India. We've always measured the call centre, not the list. Calls made, connect rate, conversion per call. But if your list is full of vehicles that no longer exist, the best agent in the country can't sell a renewal to a scrapyard.

Worse, the lapsed book has two completely different problems tangled together. One set of customers doesn't need the product anymore, and calling them is pure waste, plus it hammers agent morale. The other set needs it, wants it, and forgot, and they're the easiest recovery in insurance. A CRM export from policy issue date can't separate them. Insurance Renewal Data only becomes useful when it's joined with live facts about the vehicle. That join is the whole game, and it's the first thing I look at when an insurer asks whether Vehicle Market Intelligence would actually move their renewal numbers.

Where the facts live

The useful part is that insurers don’t have to rely only on old policy records or information a customer entered years ago. India already has a national vehicle registration system that gives access to important details such as ownership, vehicle age, fuel type, fitness validity, registration status, and whether the vehicle is used privately or commercially. This gives insurers a clearer picture of the vehicle’s current status instead of relying on outdated information.

A Vehicle Data API for Insurance lets an insurer query that record properly, authorised and consent-based, instead of trusting a proposal form filled three monsoons ago. Registration in, current vehicle state out. That's the Vehicle Intelligence API layer doing one record at a time.

Scale the same thing across the whole lapsed book and it turns into Vehicle Market Intelligence: you're no longer checking vehicles, you're measuring your portfolio. How much of your book is dead vehicles? How much transferred ownership? Which regions are ageing faster? Vehicle Intelligence for Insurance means those questions get answered before the dialler switches on, not during the post-mortem.

What changed after the list was cleaned

Three things, in the order the team felt them.

First, the call list shrank and immediately got easier. The 15% dead-vehicle policies came off entirely. Agents stopped opening every shift with a streak of "I sold that years ago" calls, and anyone who's managed a renewal floor knows what that does to a team's state of mind.

Second, the messaging got smarter. The forgotten-renewal group didn't need a discount pitch, they needed a nudge with the correct renewal details, and ownership-transfer cases needed re-issue workflows rather than sales scripts.

Third, the number itself. Ninety thousand policies back, about ₹18,800 average premium, ₹169 crore recovered from a book the insurer had mentally written off. Nobody made more calls. They made better-targeted ones, which is exactly the result Vehicle Market Intelligence is sold on, and the one reason the renewal head now funds the data team without arguing.

The responsible bit

Registration data is personal data, so this isn't a free-for-all. Consent, lawful purpose, retention limits, and role-based access need to be in the design before the first query, not bolted on after an audit. The IRDAI guidance frames how insurers should be handling customer information. On the plumbing side, our notes on consent management for eKYC and API security for financial services apply almost word for word here, and the paper versus digital checks piece covers the broader shift away from trusting documents at face value.

The pricing committee ended up approving neither the discounts nor the extra headcount, by the way. They approved the data. ₹169 crore later, that looks like the only sensible decision in the room, and it's the pitch I now make to every insurer sitting on a lapsed book they've stopped believing in: Vehicle Market Intelligence doesn't find new customers. It finds the ones you already had, if only your list had told you the truth about their vehicles.
